Since she was young, Cher Rivers knew she was not the kind of girl who got what she wanted. A girl who could hope. A girl who could dream. She knew a happily ever after just wasn’t in the cards for her.
In love for years with the last bastion of the ‘burg’s eligible bachelors, Garrett Merrick, Cher worked hard at making him laugh. Being one of the guys. Having him in her life the only way she could. All this knowing he was in love with another woman.
The Merrick Family is known for loving deep. So when Cecelia Merrick was murdered, it marked the Merricks in a way none of them recovered. Both Cecelia’s children found love. Both turned their backs on it. But Garrett “Merry” Merrick knew in his soul the woman he divorced years ago was the one for him.
Until the night when Cher took Garrett’s back and things changed. The Merrick family loves deep. They also protect fiercely. And with his eyes finally open, Garrett sees the woman who truly is for him and he goes after her.

Another hit by Kristen Ashley. I’m addicted to whatever this woman writes.
There’s no reason to wait to buy a KA book to see how reviews pan out. Her books are the quintessential exemplification of the One-Click Pre-order the minute they’re announced. I don’t care if it’s the next book in a series or the start of a new one. If she’s written it, I’m buying it. Contemporary, vampires, ghosts, witches, or parallel universes?…bring it on, Kristen Ashley, and I’ll go along for the ride.
In my review of her last book (Chaos 3), I admitted (what should probably be) some embarrassing personal habits on my part when a KA novel releases. But I don’t embarrass easily, and I have no shame.
My excitement level was just as on par with every other title she’s released. But I behaved myself this time. I didn’t wait up like a kid on Christmas Eve hoping to spot Santa breaking and entering for this to land on my Kindle. And, I didn’t commence reading immediately as usual regardless of the hour it magically appeared. I had to wait this time before I could dig in. Work was insane and demanded all of my attention for 12-14 hours a day for a full week. I was utterly and truly exhausted and nearly brain-dead at the end of each day and also had to tend to other real-life responsibilities. So, by the time I was able to get around to this book, a few days had passed. I even talked myself into slowing my reading down to savor this last volume in a beloved series. See, I can do that if I have to. I don’t have to be all messy irresponsible fangirl all the time.
I loved Cheryl, her snark and hard exterior resonated big time. It takes a special man to cut through those layers of self-protection and guide a damaged soul to happy; and Merry was the man for the job, despite his own demons. He never gave up on the challenge that was Cheryl…where many men probably would throw in the towel, thinking it all a waste of time and effort. She was fun, she was down to earth, and she wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is.
Flaws, peeves, dislikes about this? I can’t think of any. And the epilogue? Damn, just damn – everything was wrapped up in pretty little bows. We can leave these folks to their HEAs because KA treated them all right.
I’m sad to see this series end. But, knowing our KA, we’ll see these folks pop up again elsewhere. Cause really….you know JOE is gonna be pals with MACE & Stella in L.A.; TANNER, RYKER, & DEVIN have marketable skills that the MACE and DARIUS might need to call on if the NIGHTENGALE boys are busy; COLT, MIKE, and MERRY…well, they may stay tucked in the Burg to keep folks safe – BUT other people can swing thru for a visit and a beer at J&J’s. Oh…and BENNY…Anyone who’s anyone can pop into the Chicago pizzeria for a pie, vino, and a drool over Benny’s brand of badass hotness. I’ll hold out hope that it’s not goodbye, but a see ya later.
